California's New Reading List Includes Book About "LGBT Kids"

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGO) -- The California Department of Education is expanding its list of recommended reading for kindergarten through 12th grade students to include newly published works dealing with sexual identity issues.

The list of more than 7,800 recommended books is meant to prepare students for college and the ever-changing world.

The Department of Education just updated the list, and included for the first time are winners of the Stonewall Book Awards, which recognize lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender literature.
 "It's good to teach kids that everyone is different, and we are all people and that we can all be accepted for who we are. I think it's really great to see these books being recommended," said Spencer Douglas of the LGBT Youth Task Force.

The books are recommended according to age and range from young kids' activity books celebrating gay rights leader Harvey Milk, to books for older kids like " I am J," a novel about transgender teens, and "Totally Joe," which is about a boy coming out.
Social Conservatives are appalled. They say such topics promoting alternative lifestyles have no place on the state's official reading list.
"Your children are not being taught rigorous academics or critical thinking. They're being taught social engineering that will hurt them physically and emotionally," said Randy Thomasson, executive director of SaveCalifornia.com.

The new books titles are recommended, not mandatory, and the state insists they were not chosen because of their LGBT themes.
"It's not based on the content at all actually. It's mostly based on the quality of the literature," said Lupita Alcala of the Department of Education.
"It could be non-fiction, fiction, biographies and poetry. We hope that they actually get excited about reading and writing," she said.
 
"I've seen the Harvey Milk activity book and it doesn't really make a big deal over Harvey Milk's sexual orientation. He was a guy that really stood up for everyone," Douglas added.
The list also includes newly published works on immigration, such as "De Donde?," a book that talks about the reasons why people come to the U.S. illegally.

Felder+Dachs=Quinn; Christine Quinn's Jewish Financial Support (A Blast From The Past)

THE largest fund-raiser for Christine Quinn's mayoral campaign is an Orthodox Jewish singer who helped collect $53,850 from fellow observant Jews who supposedly don't support gay politicians.

Campaign filings show that Brooklyn-based Shloime Dachs led all other "intermediaries" who rounded up funds for Quinn, the first openly gay City Council speaker.
Many of the 29 contributors are affiliated with organizations - including Agudath Israel and the Ohel Children's Home and Family Services - that receive funding from the council.
Seven of the contributors also wrote checks to the other leading Democratic mayoral contenders, Comptroller Bill Thompson and Rep. Anthony Weiner.

Marvin Hellman, who operates his own real-estate management firm, said he chipped in $1,500 for Quinn because "I'm a friend of Shloime Dachs."  Despite his religious leanings, Hellman said he was not concerned about Quinn's sexual orientation."That's not an issue for me," he said.  Asked why he also gave $1,000 to Thompson and $2,000 to Weiner, Hellman said, "I'm politically active."


Dachs didn't return several calls about a fund-raiser Nov. 7 held in his home, which Quinn attended.
But Councilman Simcha Felder, also an Orthodox Jew, readily admitted he was behind the event.  "I am delighted to say I arranged this fund-raiser and was delighted to encourage people in my district and beyond to support the speaker, who is doing a wonderful job for the city," he said. 

But Felder (D-Brooklyn) stopped short of endorsing Quinn for mayor. "Not at this time," he said.
An executive at one Jewish nonprofit defended the contributions by the orthodox.
"Why should they be any different than the cultural institutions or anyone else?" the exec said. "When it comes to the budget, she's the second most powerful official in the city."

Gays Trying Using Professional Hockey To Promote Their Agenda

Right now gays are very actively searching for a "gay sports player" from one of the major sports in America

The union that represents players for the National Hockey League have officially partnered up with the You Can Play Project, which encourages acceptance and understanding of all players regardless of their sexual orientation.

Several college and professional players have participated with the campaign, which was launched by Patrick Burke, son of Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke and a scout for the Philadelphia Flyers, whose brother Brendan came out months before dying in a car accident in 2010.

"Our motto is 'Hockey Is For Everyone,' and our partnership with You Can Play certifies that position in a clear and unequivocal way," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said according to Outsports. "While we believe that our actions in the past have shown our support for the LGBT community, we are delighted to reaffirm through this joint venture with the NHL Players’ Association that the official policy of the NHL is one of inclusion on the ice, in our locker rooms and in the stands."

You Can Play will also run seminars for players to help them understand LGBT issues better. The organization will also offer confidential counseling for players on sexual orientation.

The NHL is one of the major four that may soon have an openly gay player competing on the field, ice, or court. The NFL has also been working with LGBT groups to charter a plan for whenever the first gay male athlete comes out, and the NBA recently sent a memo to teams reminding them that interviews to draft players should not include questions about religion, race, or sexual orientation, the New York Times reports.

“This has been our policy for years, and we strongly support the N.H.L.’s approach to it, and it’s our fervent hope that this draws less attention, not more, when a player eventually comes out,” NBA Commissioner David Stern said according to the Times.

The Canadian Foreskin Awareness Project (CFAP), "Canada's feistiest pro-foreskin advocacy group," has organized various demonstrations and rallies around Vancouver on August 4 and 5, spreading the message of the group's anti-circumcision stance.

Members of Bay Area Intactivists traveled to Santa Cruz, California last Sunday for the Diversity Centers's annual GLBT Pride Parade. As they made their way along Pacific Avenue carrying signs such as "Foreskin: The ultimate health coverage" and "My genitals, my property", the intactivists managed to pick up additional marchers including one young mother with her son in-hand. There was an abundance of cheers for Bay Area Intactivists as their familiar orange bracelets and literature were dispersed to the lively crowd. After the parade, several pride attendees thanked the intactivists for their work and asked how to get involved. Bay Area Intactivists will also have a contingent in the San Francisco Pride Parade on Sunday, June 24.

Oklahoma Senate Reaffirm Marriage Between A Man And A Woman

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A nonbinding resolution to reaffirm marriage as a union between a man and a woman and support the federal Defense of Marriage Act has been approved in the Oklahoma Senate.

The resolution sponsored by Norman Republican Sen. Rob Standridge was quickly adopted Tuesday on a voice vote. The House passed the resolution unanimously last week, but more than a dozen representatives walked out of the chamber instead of voting.
The bill does not have the force or effect of law. Its authors say it is meant to send a message to President Barack Obama and the U.S. Supreme Court, which recently heard arguments in two cases related to same-sex marriage rights.
