Firefox developers started boycotting Tuesday after the Web browser’s parent company Mozilla hired a new CEO with a history of opposing marriage equality.

The Mozilla Foundation, which funds the Firefox browser, announced Monday that the company’s co-founder Brendan Eich would take over as the new CEO. But in 2008, Eich made a personal $1,000 donation to support California’s Proposition 8, a ballot initiative to ban same-sex "marriage" statewide.

The Javascript creator’s hiring prompted a backlash from Mozilla employees and the general public. To protest Eich’s appointment, Firefox app developer Hampton Catlin told Mozilla in an open letter that he and his partner, who is also a Firefox developer, were boycotting all Firefox projects, “until Brendan Eich is completely removed from any day-to-day activities at Mozilla.” Catlin runs the tech startup Rarebit and had developed Wikipedia’s mobile site and the Dictionary! and Color Puzzle apps. He did not immediately return a request for comment.

The developers are pulling their apps from the marketplace and won’t issue updates to existing products. In a blog post, Catlin detailed how he and his partner were affected by Prop 8:

As a gay couple who were unable to get married in California until recently, we "morally" cannot support a Foundation that would not only leave someone with "hateful" this would also include every single Orthodox Jew views in power, but will give them a promotion and put them in charge of the entire organization. Many people are outraged in a political way, and Michael and I thank all of you for being so supportive. But, for us, this is very, very personal.

Many supporters of the boycott have taken to Twitter saying that they’re boycotting all Mozilla products and switching to Firefox’s competitor, Google Chrome. Ironically, Google is also Mozilla’s biggest revenue source thanks to royalties from a three-year deal that makes Google Firefox’s default search engine. Per the arrangement, Google paid Mozilla Foundation $274 million in 2012 — nearly 90 percent of the company’s annual revenue, according to its earnings report. The rest of Mozilla’s revenue comes from product sales. Google’s deal with Mozilla expires in November.

In a statement Mozilla released Tuesday, the company said it was “deeply committed to honoring diversity in sexual orientation and beliefs within our staff and community, across all the project’s activities,” emphasizing that it provides equal health care benefits to employees in same-sex partnerships. The response, however, didn’t mention the boycotts nor Eich’s promotion.

Eich hasn’t commented on the matter this week, but when news of his donation first surfaced in 2012, he said that he wasn’t going to engage in a public discussion over Prop 8 and that personal ideals are divorced from his professional work at Mozilla.

“People in any group or project of significant size and diversity will not agree on many crucial issues unrelated to the group or project,” Eich wrote in a blog post at the time, “so I do not insist that anyone agree with me on a great many things, including political issues, and I refrain from putting my personal beliefs in others’ way in all matters Mozilla, [JavaScript], and Web.”

Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich issued a statement Wednesday afternoon outlining his commitments to the company’s LGBT "community". The statement didn’t comment on marriage dequality or Eich’s Prop 8 donation, but instead specified how he would work with LGBT members and allies to advance the company’s anti-discrimination policies.

My personal commitment to work on new initiatives to reach out to those who feel excluded or who have been marginalized in ways that makes their contributing to Mozilla and to open source difficult…I know some will be skeptical about this, and that words alone will not change anything. I can only ask for your support to have the time to “show, not tell”; and in the meantime express my sorrow at having caused pain.

Religious people are now getting targeted from holding high level jobs, but according to the Aguda, OU, Satmar, Lakewood Vaad, and of course New Square we should still support all supporters of gay "rights".

This is why the gays are winning they care about homosexual perversion, more than we care about God.

The reason gay rights is winning is because in the war of good versus evil, both evil and those who claim to be good both support evil.

The Celebrate Israel Parade is an event attended heavily by Modern Orthodox Jewish attendees. A group listed only by its initials as a participant in this year’s parade participants list actually has a hidden agenda. In a brazen attempt to force Orthodox Jews to accept their way of life at the Torah’s expense, the understanding that was maintained for two decades has been overturned, without asking for Rabbinic authorization.
In the 1990′s Rabbi Aharon Soloveichik, Zt”l (OBM), protested against showing tolerance toward homosexuals as a public marching group at the Celebrate Israel Parade. Up until last year, his advice had been heeded. Avi Goldstein brought this to the attention of the community this year and so many leading Rabbis have signed a letter that proclaims:
Avi Goldstien's letter only pushed for a boycott of the parade, in order to prevent the gays from marching under the banner of a issur. He does not endorse protesting at the parade against them.

”Any participation in any event that includes so called “Orthodox” groups, who in any way condone or support toevah (abomination), or a deviant way of life, is asur (forbidden). Whoever is a participant or spectator is an assistant to a sinful matter. Such a brazen public chilul HaShem (desecration of the Divine Name) needs to be denounced.
Co-Signatory Rabbi Yehuda Sheinkopf said the following: “We could not let this group march under a banner of Orthodoxy without a response that this is not Orthodoxy, is it contrary to the Torah. These rabbis feel that it must be known that to join with such a group is assisting their agenda which is contrary to the Torah.”
Rabbi Yisroel Belsky gave a heter (leniency) if due to the short notice for someone who feels committed to the event what should they do so they can still attend without violating halacha. The answer was on condition that they protest the participation of the forbidden group(s).
If you wish to protest this event, the 2013 Parade occurs this Sunday, June 2, from 11 AM to 4PM in Manhattan on Fifth Avenue from 57th Street to 74th.

In this atmosphere of divisiveness over the place of gays in Jewish life, a crisis arose over the annual event that traditionally brought all Jews together: the Israel Day parade in New York City, scheduled for May 9. When Beth Simchat Torah, the gay and lesbian synagogue, requested permission, in March, to participate in the parade, an official of the American Zionist Youth Foundation, the parade sponsor, commented that "this is a very, very sensitive matter. The wrong word at this time could blow up the entire thing." A meeting of Orthodox yeshivah principals — whose students always made up at least half of the parade marchers — decided that their schools would not march if the gay synagogue marched as an identified unit. Their rationale, arrived at after consultation with Orthodox rabbinic authorities (This included Rav Ahron Soloveichik ZTL), was that the parade must not be used as a vehicle for legitimizing an unacceptable lifestyle.

Yeshivas Agree To Allow Gays To Participate in Annual Event

An Orthodox activist has launched an effort to boycott New York’s Celebrate Israel parade for allowing gay and lesbian groups to participate, despite a reported agreement among Orthodox yeshivas not to object to the gay groups.

Avi Goldstein, a Orthodox Jew from Long Island, called for the boycott of the June 2 parade in a lengthy letter circulated in the Modern Orthodox community. In his letter, Goldstein writes that gay groups’ participation “compromised the moral integrity of the parade.”

Yet Goldstein’s effort appears doomed from the start. Goldstein reports in his own letter that a group of Jewish day schools principals agreed that they would not object to the gay organizations marching in the parade at a recent meeting attended by a representative of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York , which organizes the annual Celebrate Israel event.

A spokesperson for the JCRC would only confirm that the meeting took place. Rabbi Ellis Bloch, a staff member at the Jewish Education Project, which coordinated the meeting, would not comment on the meetings’ content.

This Celebrate Israel parade draws tens of thousands to Manhattan’s 5th Avenue each Spring. This year’s parade marks the second year in which gay Jewish organizations have marched openly. Before 2012, efforts by the gay and lesbian synagogue Congregation Beit Simchat Torah were met with a demand that the group not march with a banner that used the word “gay” or “lesbian.”

Mordechai Levovitz, co-director and founder of Jewish Queer Youth, which marched last year, said that he expects the 150 people to march with the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender contingent this year. Gay and lesbian groups participating in the 2013 parade include Levovitz’s group, CBST, A Wider Bridge, and Eshel.

Though the parade is organized by the nondenominational JCRC, participation is heavily Modern Orthodox. Three quarters of the Jewish day schools that marched in 2011 were Modern Orthodox, according to a 2012 Forward report.

Gay groups’ participation didn’t cause much trouble last year. The groups marched at the end of the parade, and their participation drew little media attention. This year, however, Goldstein hopes to marshal Orthodox support and ban the gay participants.

“I hope to reach school parents, most of whom likely are unaware that Jewish Queer Youth was permitted to march in last year’s parade,” Goldstein told the Forward in an email. “Schools serve their parents and their student bodies; if concerned parents and students protest to their schools, the schools are obligated to take these protests into account.”

In his lengthy letter, Goldstein argues against gay marriage and the acceptance of homosexuality. He warns that biblical punishments threaten those who tolerate homomsexuality.
“The Torah states that homosexual behavior can lead to the spitting out of Israel’s inhabitants,” Goldstein writes. “If we participate in a parade that endorses homosexuality, how are we contributing to Israel’s welfare?”

Levovitz, for his part, said that he hadn’t been approached about the letter. The JCRC confirmed that Jewish Queer Youth and the other gay organizations were scheduled to march in the June 2 parade.
