Swedish Ombudsman (Commisioner) For Children Urges Sweden To Ban Milah

Swedish Ombudsman calls for ban on circumcision

Posted: Mon, 30 Sep 2013 15:17
Commisioner
The Swedish Ombudsman for Children has written to a newspaper calling for the country to outlaw the circumcision of boys.

"Circumcising a child without medical justification or his consent contravenes the child's human rights," wrote Fredrik Malmberg in a text co-signed with representatives from the Swedish Society of Medicine, the Swedish Society of Health Professionals, the Swedish Paediatric Society, and the Swedish Association of Paediatric Surgeons, and published in the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter. "The operation is painful, irreversible and can lead to dangerous complications."

Mr Malmberg, said the practice of circumcision violates the basic rights of boys and is against the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Circumcision was legalised in Sweden in 2001, when a new law permitted religious practitioners to perform the operation if the child is under two months old. After that it has to be done by a physician with the full consent of the parents, who must be fully informed of the implications. It is estimated that some 3,000 boys are circumcised every year in Sweden.

Ombudsmen from across Scandinavia are scheduled to meet today (Monday 30 September) in Oslo, Norway, to discuss the issue.

Last year, an attempt by the far-right Sweden Democrat party to ban circumcision was rejected.
Calls to ban circumcision resurfaced in Sweden last week.

The right-wing Sweden Democrats tabled a bill to criminalise non-medical circumcision, and the children’s ombudsman — together with representatives of several healthcare bodies — published an opinion piece in the newspaper Dagens Nyheter claiming that circumcision contravenes human rights.

Björn Söder and Per Ramhorn of the Sweden Democrat Party submitted the parliamentary motion, which notes that “outdated religious traditions aimed at mutilating small boys and girls… do not belong in a modern society governed by the rule of law”.

“I understand the Jews’ point of view and we have freedom of religion in Sweden, but sometimes it goes against human rights… Circumcision can affect one’s sex life. It is a form of mutilation,” said Mr Ramhorn.
“Outdated religious traditions aimed at mutilating small boys and girls… do not belong in a modern society governed by the rule of law”

“It is of course an unacceptable attack on what we as Jews see as a fundamental right to carry our tradition on to future generations,” said Lars Dencik, a Swedish-Jewish professor in social psychology at Denmark’s Roskilde University.

“Any demand for the prohibition of brit milah is a frontal attack on Judaism,” said Göran Rosenberg, a prominent Swedish-Jewish author. “In Sweden, this demand is most aggressively pursued by the Sweden Democrats… This should worry those liberals and others who use the same arguments and who choose not to notice that there is an agenda of cultural and religious intolerance lurching beneath them.”

Benjamin Gerber, a pedagogue with the Jewish community in Gothenburg and the son of Sweden’s only non-medically trained mohel, criticised Sweden’s Council of Jewish Communities for avoiding the debate around circumcision. “This will not go away. Instead of keeping a low profile, it’s time for us Jews to come out and say that we have no problems with our bodies… We don’t have thousands of Jews and Muslims in Sweden complaining about feeling violated. Instead, the critics come from outside these communities.”
In Scandinavia, the campaign to ban circumcision has supporters across the political spectrum. In 2011, a number of medical doctors, academics, humanists and priests backed the Swedish Association of Health Professionals’ bid to outlaw circumcision, arguing that the practice violates personal integrity.

In Denmark, an organisation was formed earlier this year to campaign against non-medical circumcision following a debate sparked by a doctor who argued that circumcised men have poor sex lives.

In Norway, a number of organisations and politicians failed to push through a law last year to ban ritual circumcision; it can now only be carried out at hospitals there.

Norway’s children’s ombudsman reacted to the Op-Ed by reiterating the position that non-medical circumcision of boys is a human rights violation — a stance also held by counterpart organizations in Finland, Norway and Denmark.

Last week, a motion calling to ban the practice was submitted to Sweden’s parliament by two lawmakers from the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats party. Earlier this month, Denmark’s left-leaning Social Liberal Party passed an internal motion in opposition of ritual circumcision of boys.

European Council Passes Anti Bris Milah Resolution

European council passes anti-ritual circumcision resolution

A resolution that calls male ritual circumcision a “violation of the physical integrity of children” was passed overwhelmingly by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The council, a pan-European intergovernmental organization, debated and passed the resolution on Tuesday based on a report by the Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development led by German rapporteur Marlene Rupperecht. The resolution passed by a vote of 78 in favor and 13 against, with 15 abstentions.

The resolution calls on states to “clearly define the medical, sanitary and other conditions to be ensured for practices such as the non-medically justified circumcision of young boys.”

It also calls on member states to “initiate a public debate, including intercultural and interreligious dialogue, aimed at reaching a large consensus on the rights of children to protection against violations of their physical integrity according to human rights standards” and to “adopt specific legal provisions to ensure that certain operations and practices will not be carried out before a child is old enough to be consulted.”

Practices covered by the resolution include female genital mutilation, the circumcision of young boys for religious reasons, early childhood medical interventions in the case of intersexual children, corporal punishment, and the submission to or coercion of children into piercings, tattoos or plastic surgery.

Large majorities rejected five amendments that sought to remove or alter references to the circumcision of boys. An amendment that removed a reference to the “religious rights of parents and families” was supported by a large majority of members.

“Although the adoption of this report is non-binding and does not represent any direct threat to milah, we are troubled at the readiness of the Parliamentary Assembly to dismiss the points made during the debate about religious freedom,” the Milah UK organization told JTA.

The ritual circumcision of boys younger than 18 has come under attack increasingly in Scandinavia and German-speaking European countries both by left-wing secularists and right-wingers who fear the influence of immigration from Muslim countries.

Will any politician condemn this group or the toeviah "pride" parade that allowed them to march (they only march in gay "pride parade")?

Will Christine Quinn and Bill De Blasio openly support the group to ban Bris Milah because there gay.

Will Anthony Weiner who seemed to be in agreement with Erick Salgado about the movement to ban Bris Milah, (and thus didn't seem to care about the "New York's gay "pride parade" line because he "understood" the context) continue to pander to the LGBT "community", or was he really only pandering to our community, and will defend the toevah parade's decision to allow anti Bris Milah groups to march, and attack anyone who wants to defend Bris Milah by mentioning that the threat is serious because they march every year in New York's  gay "pride" parade.
  • “Anthony did not understand Reverend Salgado’s remarks,” wrote Barbara Morgan, Weiner’s spokeswoman, in an email. “He did applaud Speaker Quinn’s response because he agreed with it.” (gaycitynews)

Some politicians who marched in last years gay pride parade were NY Governor Andrew Cuomo, Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, Congressman Jerrold Nadler, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, and Mayoral Candidates Christine Quinn, and Bill DeBlasio.   Though he couldn't march personally Daniel Squadron Williamsburg's State Senator and NYC Public Advocate Candidate sent representatives to march in his place!

DeBlasio + Quinn Have NO Problem With Banning Milah, Only Saying Who's Trying To Ban It!

If your wondering how good the candidates are for the Jewish community watch their reaction to Mr Salgado at the FJCC Forum while he is saying that the attack on MBP is really an attack on Milah itself and specifically on the point that groups trying to ban Bris Milah march in the NY gay pride parade.
their immediate reaction
Bill Thompson, was listening intently (before and after the parade was mentioned) then looks like he just came up with a idea and stares at the lesbian Quinn and smirks.
Anthony Weiner, was enthusiastic and clapping at Mr Salgado's comments about people trying to ban Bris Milah, and was listening intently when he mentioned the parade, then writes something down and jots a look at Quinn and smirks.
Bill DeBlasio and John Liu, both are straight faced the entire time.
"Married" Lesbian Quinn, has a holier than though smirk on the entire time up until Mr Salgado mentions the gay pride parade, she then has a annoyed confused face until after Mr Salgado finished saying there trying to ban it all together, then she looks like her dog was shot, she then goes from biting her tongue, to redoing her hair before going back in to her usual condescending smirk.

When it was his turn it, Anthony Weiner seemed to have responded to Erick by saying "I'm a liberal by just about definition of it, but I believe that there is a liberal elitist condensation, when it come to religion in our city". (more on Anthony Weiner's Bris Milah position "is he pandering to us or the gays?")

When it was his turn it, Bill DeBlasio attacked Erick Salgado for fighting for arguably (kares) most important mitzva in torah, and DeBlasio only cared about the implied 100% true insult to the gay "community".  His attack led to heckles from the more than 90% orthodox audience, and Christine Quinn starting to lead a vibrant clap consisting of her and Liu and a few reporters.  This in turn led to booing and caused moderator Avi Schick to ask people to "hold their comments till the end".

John Liu in response to BDB said "This is a great city, where we can embrace our true diversity, whether it be the "pride" that is exciting with members of the LGBT "community", or the growing Orthodox community right here in Brooklyn and other parts of the city."

Christine Quinn YMS then proceeded to lecture the Jewish community on "tolerance" while NEVER addressing the fact that there is a movement to ban Bris Milah,  She "forgot" that the only "attack" on the gay "community" was the fact that the gay pride parade allows a group to march in their parade that wants to ban Bris Milah. she then proceeded to say she will keep Bloomberg's regulations with out ever adressing the fact that their is a move to ban Bris Milah in this country that is led by members of the said gay "community".

The shocking part is that may have not been Christine Quinn;s most egregious attack on the Jewish community in the forum which was easily over 90% Orthodox.  Christine Quinn spoke about her "wife" 3 times.  The most egregious of these was in a question about what sports team she liked she responded "when I married my "wife"

"Gay" Anti Semite Who Tried To Ban Bris Milah In San Francisco Responds To This Blog On Facebook

Jonathon Conte's response to my facebook post

Lloyd Schofield (2nd from the left) was the main person (gay of course) behind the ban, Matthew Hess (immediately to the left of Schofield) who's responsible for the Anti Semitic, pro gay, Anti Bris-Milah comic book (who found out about the Anti Bris Milah at a San Diego Gay Pride Parade).  This bill would have banned Bris Milah altogether!

Anti Bris Milah Group To Ride Naked In Williamsburg

This summary is not available. Please click here to view the post.

Erick Salgado Says That MBP Is The First Step Towards Banning Milah Altogether

Erick Salgado says that MBP is the first step towards banning Milah Altogether.  He uses proof from the atempts to ban Milah altogether in Massachusetts, San Francisco and Santa Monica.  He further notes that groups trying to ban circumcision march every single year in the Gay Pride Parade.

He also notes he's the only candidate that will fight for vouchers for yeshiva parents.

The reason candidate Salgado said  "and you better say that" is due to Jacob Kornbluh writing an article for YWN where he "forgets" to mention Erick Salgado's position on helping Yeshiva parents.

coincidentally he also "forgot" only Erick Salgado's position in his video on the subject.

38% Of People In the UK Want To Ban Bris Milah 45% Want To Ban Shechita

According to the results of a YouGov poll conducted on the behalf of the Jewish Chronicle (UK)

38%  support a ban on Bris Milah (circumcision), 35% against a ban on Bris Milah, and 27% are undecided.
45% support a ban on Shechita (Kosher animal slaughtering), 27% are against ban on Shechita, and 28 27% are undecided.

Interestingly enough that 38% figure is bigger than the support for the largest party in Britain's Parliament according to the latest poll
  • 37% of the public support Labour
  • 27% of the public support the Conservatives
  • 17% of the public support the UK Independence Part
People who support the party UK Independence Party were the most likely to support these antisemitic policies. With 71% of people wanting to ban Shechita, and 51% wanting to ban Milah (the only party above 50%).  Non surprisingly the party that is most in favor of taking away Jews religous freedom is strongly in favor of LGBT "rights".

Also not surprisingly younger people are more supporting of banning both Milah and Shechita. 41% of 18-24 year-olds would ban both Milah and Shechita.

These numbers are especially troubling because there have been numerous attempts to ban Milah in the past few years around the world (most notably in Germany but also in places like Sweden, Norway, Holland, and Finland) including the United States (Massachusetts, San Francisco, and Santa Monica)

Glen Poole, the director of "gender equality consultancy Helping Men", and a leading fighter against Bris Milah said

"Ending religious circumcision in the UK is now more popular with the British public than any of the political parties. As the majority of British people want to ban this dangerous practice, it is time for the Government to lead the nation in having the difficult conversations required to end medically unnecessary male circumcision in the UK.
The Government's 'call to end violence against women and girls strategy' makes it clear that harmful practices like female genital mutilation are unacceptable in a modern equal society. But surely protecting girls against unnecessary genital surgery whilst turning a blind eye as surgery is performed on their brothers, is also not acceptable in a modern equal society.
"It is now five years since  the NSPCC and the Children's Rights Alliance for England recommended that the Government take action to end the practice of circumcising boys without their consent. In that time baby boys bled to death in the UK as a result of medically unnecessary male circumcision. It is time now, with the public's backing, for the Government to take decisive action to confine this medically unnecessary practice to the history books."
Dayan Pinchas Toledano, former head of the Sephardi Beth Din, now Haham of Amsterdam, said that the survey’s results “don’t surprise or shock me”. The Dutch community recently mobilised to protect shechita after politicians wanted to introduce compulsory pre-stunning of animals before religious slaughter — which would have meant banning the Jewish method of killing animals.  Dayan Toledano, himself a retired mohel, said: “If you try to ban such practices, you have no religious freedom at all.”

While Dayan Yisroel Lichtenstein, head of the Federation Beth Din, said: “It’s worrying and it shows we need to do a lot more public relations to put our case.” Dayan Lichtenstein is particularly concerned at the level of support for a ban on shechita among young people “because I would have expected their education to have made them more liberally-minded.”
